Sunday, May 5, 2019 (Launch Time 1:00 PM)
Our first scheduled Sunday trip is around Howland Island which is located near Port Byron. It is a loop of approximately 10.7 miles in length and is made up of sections of the Seneca River and the Barge Canal. It is also a great place for viewing wildlife. More information can be found in "Take a Paddle - Finger Lakes" by Rich and Sue Freeman. This is a long paddle, so be sure that you can do the distance. Please be sure that you are properly dressed for the paddle and have all appropriate equipment.
Note: We typically stop half way through the paddle for a break. Feel free to bring something to snack on. Also, be sure to note the weather conditions by clicking the "Local Weather Forecast" button, and check the website for last minute changes or cancellations.
Directions from Syracuse: Take the New York State Thruway west from Syracuse and get off at Weedsport (Exit 40). Go south on Rt. 34 a short distance and then turn right on Rt. 31 and head west. In Port Byron, head north on Rt. 38 for approximately 3 miles. Just before the bridge over the Erie Canal/Seneca River there is a DEC boat launch labeled "Port Byron Fishing Access Site".
Please Note: Directions for each trip are provided to help people unfamiliar with the area to find the location of the trip. They are not meant to necessarily be the most direct route from your own location.
