1:00 PM

I'm planning to have a picnic on the deck after the paddle. I live less than 10 miles from the lock near Soule Rd. and Rt. 31. I'll do the burgers and dogs, corn, and beverages. If you want to add to the feast, go for it.

Brewerton, NY

This trip is an 8 mile loop around an island in the Oneida River, a slow moving body of water. The trip will start at 1:00 PM from the east end of Lock 23 and we will finish the loop by going back to the lock (it may not be operating this late in the year).  About half way there is a short carry around a dam.   It's trip #9 in William Ehling's book Canoeing Central New York. There is a short portage around the right side of a control gate near the village of Caughdenoy, after which the water quickens briefly (not rapids, just faster moving water). We will meet at the launch site at Lock 23. Please be sure that you are properly dressed for the paddle and have all appropriate equipment.

Directions From Syracuse:
Take Route 81 north to the Brewerton exit and bear right at the end of the ramp toward Brewerton and Route 11 (note that at every turn, there is a sign and arrow for Lock 23). Turn right on Route 11 and then left at the first light, Guy Young Rd. At the end, turn left on Caughdenoy Rd. and make your first right on Black Creek Rd. About 3/4 mile on your right is a turn that will take you to the lock.

Put kayaks in the water at the far end to the wooden walkway - follow the cinder path at the far end of the parking area. It's about a 150 yard walk, so you may want to bring a cart if you use one.

Please Note:
Directions for each trip are provided to help people unfamiliar with the area to find the location of the trip. They are not meant to necessarily be the most direct route from your own location.
